#MYOL News: Boston’s City Hall Plaza Chosen As Site For Statue of Celtics Legend Bill Russell (July 10th-16th)
City Hall Plaza will serve as home to the Bill Russell statue, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca announced Monday in a brief ceremony on the expected location on the south side near State Street. While considering a handful of locations during the selection process, a site visit to City Hall Plaza with Russell confirmed to the legacy committee that it was the ideal spot.
“The mayor brought Bill here and, when they came to look at the site, literally hundreds of kids surrounded him and were taking pictures,” said Pagliuca. “It was as if he was a live statue here. It’s going to be very exciting.”
Menino suggested that Russell could be the first seed in making the area a place to celebrate all of Boston’s sports history. “It might be a plaza of champions in the future,” Menino said, “but we want to make sure that Bill Russell is the lead champion.” Russell led the Celtics to 11 league championships in 13 seasons.
President Barack Obama suggested Boston build a statue of Russell when he awarded him a Presidential Medal of Freedom in February. Obama said he hoped one day children would look up to a statue “built not only to Bill Russell the player but Bill Russell the man.” Three artists have been selected as finalists for the design of the statue and, after making their first official site visit Monday, will be asked to submit their visions to the legacy committee in October. Pagliuca suggested the actual statue could be unveiled next spring, noting he hoped it would coincide with the Celtics’ 2011-12 season, if the lockout allows for one.
The three artists are Fern Cunningham, creator of the Monument to Harriett Tubman in Boston’s South End; Antonio Mendez with Oudens Ello Architects, whose work includes the player statues outside Fenway Park; and Anne Hirsch, a local artist based in Somerville. The artists have the challenge of designing a statue that not only celebrates Russell’s accomplishments on the basketball court, but what he meant to the city off the court.

#MYOL News: LeBron James Gets Deal To Sponsor Collegiate Teams (July 10th-16th)
LeBron James has struck sponsorship deals with Ohio State, Kentucky and Miami to wear his Nike-branded gear, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
The Buckeyes and Wildcats, two of the more visible college programs, are expected to be ranked among the country’s best basketball teams in 2011-12.
James’ publicist, Keith Estabrook, wouldn’t comment on the deals when approached by the Sun-Sentinel. He suggested the paper direct all questions to Nike. The company did not immediately return an email seeking comment, according to the newspaper.
As pointed out by the Sun-Sentinel, James will follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan, whose Nike gear is associated with his alma mater, North Carolina. California and Cincinnati also sport the Jordan brand through sponsorship deals.
James has close ties to each of the programs he will sponsor. The Miami Heat forward is from the state of Ohio, openly roots for the school and frequently wears Buckeyes gear. He also maintains a close relationship with Kentucky coach John Calipari and has scrimmaged against players from the Miami Hurricanes program since joining the Heat in 2010.

#MsLMstatus: Thailand Set To Elect First Female Prime Minister! (July 3rd-9th)
BANGKOK — The sister of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra led Thailand’s main opposition party to a landslide victory in elections Sunday, heralding an extraordinary political turnaround five tumultuous years after her fugitive billionaire brother was toppled in an army coup.
The vote paves the way for 44-year-old Yingluck Shinawatra, who has never held office, to become this Southeast Asian kingdom’s first female prime minister. A large mandate to govern could help the new government navigate a way out of out of the crisis that has plagued Thailand since Thaksin’s 2006 overthrow. But the question remains whether the nation’s elite power brokers, including the monarchy and the army, would accept the result. Thaksin was barred from politics years ago after a graft conviction, and the U.S.-educated Yingluck, who he calls “my clone,” is widely considered her proxy.
The incumbent premier, Abhisit Vejjajiva, conceded defeat Sunday night and said he was ready to become the opposition.
With 94 percent of the vote counted, preliminary results from the Election Commission indicated Yingluck’s Pheu Thai party had a strong lead with 261 of 500 parliament seats, well over the majority needed to form a government. Abhisit’s Democrats had 162 seats. Speaking to a throng of cheering supporters at her party headquarters in Bangkok, Yingluck declined to declare victory until final results are released. But she said: “I don’t want to say that Pheu Thai wins today. It’s a victory of the people.”
In an interview broadcast on the Thai PBS television station, Thaksin called the preliminary outcome “a step forward.”
“People are tired of a standstill,” he said from the desert emirate of Dubai, where he lives in exile to avoid a two-year prison sentence for graft he says is politically motivated. “They want to see change in a peaceful manner.” Thaksin said he did not feel vengeful and was “ready to forgive all.”
After the army toppled Thaksin, controversial court rulings removed two of the pro-Thaksin premiers who followed, one of whom won a 2007 vote intended to restore democracy. That chain of events paved the way for army-backed Abhisit to assume power – ultimately sparking the massive anti-government protests last year which brought Bangkok to its knees, leaving 90 people dead, 1,800 wounded and the glittering city’s skyline engulfed in flames. Army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha reiterated his vow last week to stay neutral in the vote, dismissing rumors the military would stage another coup.
“The future depends on whether the traditional elite will be willing to accept the voice of the people,” Pavin Chachavalpongpun of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, told The Associated Press.

#MYOL News: Kemba Walker Signs Deal With Under Armour (July 3rd-9th)
Kemba Walker was undoubtedly the biggest story of the 2011 NCAA March Madness Tournament as well as the Big East Tournament, as he led UConn to Conference and National supremacy with his lightning-quick speed and scoring prowess.
His big-game presence got him drafted in the lottery segment of the 2011 NBA Draft, heading to the Charlotte Bobcats – a franchise partially owned by Michael Jordan. On Sneaker News, Kemba Walker made his presence known with his in-game Air Jordans, as he was prominently featured in our NCAA Feet: Toe-to-Toe segments, so many UConn and Bobcats fans were excited about the prospect of Kemba being an Air Jordan and Jordan Brand poster-child.
The possibility of Walker joining the ranks of Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul in the Jordan Brand athlete fraternity were rather slim, and in a somewhat surprising marketing move, Under Armour snatched up the standout guard and signed him to a multi-year deal, though terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Walker joins fellow back-court phenom Brandon Jennings at the forefront of the Under Armour Basketball movement, and he was quick to defend his allegiance on the worldwide social media platform known as Twitter, claiming that he and Under Armour are “gon be ON” .
