The White House announced Tuesday that President Obama intends to appoint the Colombian singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, to the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, along with three others. “I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country,” Obama said. “I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.” The Grammy-winning artist founded the Barefoot Foundation in 1995, which helps fund schools in her native Colombia, as well as in South Africa and Haiti. She is also a founding member of Latin America in Solidarity Action and became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in 2003. A longtime Obama supporter, Shakira endorsed him during the 2008 election and performed at Obama’s inauguration. Additionally, she met with both the president and vice president in February 2010 to discuss education and early childhood development. Next up for the singer? She’ll be honored next month as the 2011 Latin Recording Academy “Person of the Year.”

RIP Apple CEO Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011)

An American inventor and entrepreneur. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs was co-founder and previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of the Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney.

In the late 1970s, Jobs—along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and others—designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC's mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Apple Lisa and, one year later, the Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs left Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets.

In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd, which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1 percent until its acquisition by The Walt Disney Company in 2006, making Jobs Disney's largest individual shareholder at seven percent and a member of Disney's Board of Directors. Apple's 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its interim CEO from 1997, then becoming permanent CEO from 2000 onwards, spearheading the advent of the iPod, iPhone and iPad. After resigning as CEO in August 2011, Jobs was elected chairman of Apple's board of directors and held that title until his death. On his death he was widely described as a visionary, pioneer and genius—perhaps one of the foremost—in the field of business, innovation, and product design, and a man who had profoundly changed the face of the modern world, revolutionized at least six different industries, and who was an "exemplar for all chief executives".

On October 5, 2011, Jobs died at his home in Palo Alto, California, aged 56. A copy of his death certificate, which was made public on Monday, October 10, indicates he died about 3 p.m. on October 5 and listed respiratory arrest as the immediate cause of death, with "metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor" as the underlying cause. His occupation was listed as “entrepreneur” in the “high tech” business.

Don’t expect to hear Diggy Simmons drop the F-bomb. Rev Run’s 16-year-old son is going against the grain and refraining from cursing in his music. “When people hear me say certain types of things, they say, I wonder what Rev would think,” Diggy told 93.9 WKYS. “I wouldn’t say anything in the first place that would be shameful to my family anyway, but I am me at the end of the day.” And staying true to himself means not using profanity, even though his peers may do so. “That’s not even me trying to be clean. I don’t need it, I don’t need to curse in my rhymes or in any of my songs,” explained a confident Diggy. So far he’s made good on his word with his popular mixtapes and single “Copy Paste,” and sees no need to change. “Honestly, I haven’t really sat down and said, when I’m older I’m gonna curse or when I’m older, I’m not, but I don’t see myself cursing anytime soon,” he said. “I don’t think I should ever use it, honestly. I guess I’m making the decision now, I’m never gonna curse. There’s no point.” Diggy’s vulgarity-free debut is tentatively due this December on Atlantic Records.

NBA Lockout: Ex-Jazz Star Andrei Kirilenko (AK-47) Signs With Russian Team (October 2nd-8th)

Former Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko has signed a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow that gives him an option to return to the NBA if the lockout ends. Kirilenko, an NBA free agent who played for CSKA Moscow until joining the Jazz in 2001, said he would donate any money he earns in Russia to his charitable foundation. “I am glad to be back with the team where I spent my years of adolescence,” Kirilenko said, according to a news release from the Euroleague. “It’s a pleasure to have a chance to play for Russian fans, my friends and relatives.” Team president Andrei Vatutin said the signing was a win-win for both sides, even if the lockout ends and Kirilenko returns to the NBA. “We understand perfectly all the risks of his possible departure but we knowingly take them,” Vatutin said. “Even if he leaves the team in a month or two — depending on his desire — Kirilenko will play several games, and his participation will add to the interest toward our team,” Kazlauskas said. CSKA Moscow coach Jonas Kazlauskas said as a rule, he doesn’t like the idea of bringing in NBA players during the lockout. But Kirilenko, because of his stature in Russian basketball, is the exception, he said. “Andrei is the star of Russian and world basketball, he means for his country as much as (Arvydas) Sabonis for Lithuania, Pau Gasol for Spain, (Dirk) Nowitzki for Germany,” Kazlauskas said.

NBA Lockout: Spurs’ Tony Parker To Play in France For $2K A Month (October 2nd-8th)

Tony Parker will play with a French team during the NBA lockout, earning a mere $1,995 per month despite his star power on and off the basketball court. ASVEL, which is based in Villeurbanne, near Lyon in southeast France, announced on Wednesday that Parker will play for them. Parker told the sports daily L’Equipe that the decision is “logical.” He is vice president of the club and wants to help it advance. “I’ll be playing nearly for free … If I play the entire season, we’ll go for the title,” Parker said. Parker has won three NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs and has been an All-Star selection three times. He expects to play his first game for ASVEL against Paris on Oct. 14.
