Leap Day is a special moment in time, a 24 hour period that is unique in itself as it only occurs every 4 years and today, February 29, 2024 we will be highlighting a unique, rising star basketball player!
Less than a year ago, Amara Freeman, suffered a traumatic injury that would sideline a player who despises not being active inside of the court lines.
MYOL: Amara, how did it feel to be forced to sit on the sideline and have to watch basketball for several months when all you wanted to do was play?
A: It felt very different, I had to watch the game in a different view which pushed me to get back to playing. Now, I won’t ever take this for granted.
As a middle sibling and eldest brother of the Freeman Brothers, a superstar 1, 2 basketball duo sounding alarms from Boston, MA to Manchester, NH and all along the east coast … Amara, has been no stranger to adversity in the past few years! Both brothers are impressively high honors students despite their circumstance!
In 2021, The Freeman’s showed the perfect example of perseverance, as a whole family and each as individuals after experiencing a house fire that redirected them from Mill City aka Lowell, MA to Manchester, NH.
Immediately, gym time increased immensely and The Freeman’s found solace inside the soul of the game.
But the adversity did not stop there! From having to leave gyms due to closing time to being kicked out by janitors / YMCAs and even ousted by vote by local town league administrators due to his relocation in duress.
July 8th will be one-year from his latest obstacle and whatever hurdles to be jumped en route will make clearance, in go-time and in due time. Mr. Amara finished his 8th grade year with 30 points (8, 3 Pointers, 0 Turnovers) as he was undoubtedly the motor to his team’s win against a bigger, stronger squad that beat them earlier in the season. Fenn School, who plays in a 9th grade league, was crowned Champions of The 2024 Mark Briscoe Tournament alongside Amara’s 3pt Contest Championship! The first of many to come!
